A secondary analysis of data from the 1984 National Alcohol Survey for 5,221 respondents (with a heavy oversampling of blacks & Hispanics) is drawn on to explore the extent & meaning of religious shifts of persons of Hispanic origin from Catholicism to Protestantism & other "alternative" religious affiliations in the US. Comparisons of Catholics & non-Catholics are made by using descriptive statistics & regression analyses controlling for a variety of demographic factors. Analyses show that significant numbers of Hispanics are turning to non-Catholic affiliations, especially those who are English-speaking, third-generation Americans, & residents of areas of low Hispanic concentration. Additionally, while non-Catholic Hispanics are socially distinctive in having higher levels of church attendance & attenuated Hispanic identification, they are, for the most part, not higher in secular status compared to Catholics. Hispanics are shifting away from Catholicism, but Protestantism probably does not represent a new institutional path toward assimilation & upward mobility for this rapidly growing minority group. 3 Tables, 21 References. This article examines Charles Villers'sEssay on the Spirit and Influence of Luther's Reformation(1804) in its intellectual and historical context. Exiled from France after 1792, Villers intervened in important French and German debates about the relationship of religion, history, and philosophy. The article shows how he took up a German Protestant discussion on the meaning of the Reformation that had been underway from the 1770s through the end of the century, including efforts by Kantians to seize the mantle of Protestantism for themselves. Villers's essay capitalized on a broad interest in the question of Protestantism and its meaning for modern freedom around 1800. Revisiting the formation of the narrative of Protestantism and progress reveals that it was not a logical progression from Protestant theology or religion but rather part of a specific ideological and social struggle in the wake of the French Revolution and the collapse of the Old Regime.

Diversity and the fragmented nature of Protestantism are the reason of various interpretations of its boundaries and the number of denominations it comprises. The key criterion of affiliation with Protestantism is the acceptance of basic doctrines set forward in the Niceno- Constantinopolitan Creed. The analysis of the beliefs of the religious organizations traditionally connected with Protestantism suggests that Jehovah's Witnesses, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Pentecostals-Unitarians are out of the doctrinal field of Christianity in general and out of the range of Protestantism in particular. The other distinct characteristic of Protestantism is the acceptance of the Five Solas – sola scriptura, sola fide, sola gratia, Solus Christus и Soli Deo gloria, which are aimed at the validation of Christian doctrines set forth in the Bible. This thesis was demonstrated via the analysis of the doctrinal sources of Lutheranism, Reformed Church and Anglican Church. The article also reports on the five solas present in the creeds of Baptists, Pentecostals, Methodists, Mennonites, Religious Society of Friends, and Seventh-Day Adventists. Cultural and historical proximity of protestants and religious organizations that do not meet the criteria above calls for a new category – "post reformation religions" – that can embrace them all.
